Hello Seattle Luthiers!
Here is information on the next three Seattle Luthier
events this fall!
To accomodate our guest luthier in November, Julius
Borges, there will be a change in the sequence from
our normal alternation of shop/social nights on the
2nd Tuesday of each month. The November 8th meeting
will be the next shop night and the upcoming October
11th meeting will be a special social gathering.
Event #1
October 11th 6-9pm Potluck BBQ at Golden Gardens; Rain
or Shine!
This event will be a bonfire centric affair with
potluck food and non denominational incineration of
past year's worth of shop memories, failed repairs,
possessed instruments and other luthier dross. That
returned check from the customer from hell? To the
Fire!
Some will recall a similar event last April. It was
loads of fun and instructive regarding the
flammability of luthier materials in general. Anyone
witnessing such an event will certainly keep a fire
extinguisher handy in their shop. Eerily, the
batteries in the camera died while attempting to
document last years event but this year we hope to
capture some of the moments.
The location of the Potluck BBQ and Bonfire will be at
Golden Gardens Park adjacent (North) of Shilshole
Marina. Since reserving a covered area costs about as
much as a decent set of rosewood, we will claim the
nearest unused covered area next to the parking area
for free. The bonfire will be set in a nearby firepit
on the actual beach.
The above times are approximate, some of us will be
arriving earlier to setup/claim the spot. In addition
to food and sacrificial items, some beach chairs and
if arriving early, some fire starting elements or
scrap wood would be welcome. Friends and guest are
welcome. Bring along an instrument to play if you
want.
Event #2 Hide Glue and other topics with Julius
Borges!
The November SLUG meeting will be November 8th, 7-9pm
aboard Michael Gurian's barge with guest luthier
Julius Borges. More details will follow. A light
social will take place before hand. Julius will
demonstate and explain the selection and use of hide
glue and compare it with modern adhesives. Julius
brings a wealth of experience as a journeyman
woodworker and luthier. For those that do not know
Julius, this will not be a dry discussion!
As always, guests are welcome.

Event #3 Workshop with Julius Borges November 12th.
In addition to the November 8th shop meeting, a
workshop with Julius is planned to cover some of the
same material in more detail, with hands on
opportunity. This activity will take place at a local
luthier' s shop and is expected to be about 4 hours in
duration and there will be a fee for the workshop.
More information about the workshop will be sent out
soon.
